Saltwater intrusion, the process by which salty water moves into freshwater aquifers, continues to threaten South Florida's freshwater supply, making the region's drinking water even more precious. In Miami-Dade County, unground clay pipes -- which are traditionally found in poorer communities.

These pipes (made of shale, a rock composed of mud and a mix of clay) are eco-friendly and fare better against the salt compared to other materials.
